Industrial testing of new agent for chemical purification of industrial titanium tetrachloride from vanadium and quality assessment of titanium sponge.

Industrial testing of new agents based on hydrocarbon reductant for chemical purification of industrial titanium tetrachloride from vanadium has been carried out at ZTMC. Positive results of the laboratory testing made it possible to carry out the industrial testing concerning the purification of industrial titanium tetrachloride from vanadium successfully. According to the results it has been identified that molecular analysis of the experiment purified titanium tetrachloride meets the requirements of normative documents.
The results of testing of titanium sponge obtained from the experiment purified titanium tetrachloride in industrial conditions showed that it meets the requirements of GOST 17746-96 regarding the Grade TG-90.
The suggested technology is characterized by simplicity of the process and by a considerable reduction of expenditures connected with preparation of the agent for purification of industrial titanium tetrachloride from vanadium. The required indexes of purification of industrial titanium tetrachloride in industrial conditions have been achieved. Economical consumption of hydrocarbon reductant (1.0-2.0 kg per 1 t of purified titanium tetrachloride) has been proven in practice.
The possibility of processing of carbon-vanadium industrial products into friable cake has been proven, as well as the possibility of obtaining ash concentrate, which contains a considerable amount (35-55%) of the valued component – vanadium pentooxide.

Research on sponge titanium lots’homogeneity by hardness, chemical and fractional compositions.

The quality of sponge titanium in lot is regulated by hardness, chemical and fractional compositions. However, these parameters do not describe sponge titanium quality fully. It is necessary to define lot homogeneity for a full description.. By mathematical statistics methods, the homogeneity of sponge titanium pilot batch is analyzed at each packing item and at whole batch with defining of the main certificate characteristics - hardness, chemical and fractional compositions. The results of the research showed that deviations in sponge titanium quality characteristics are within the acceptable values of certificate characteristics and it can serve as criterion for assessment of homogeneity.

Realization of submicrocrystalline state in VT16 alloy by severe plastic deformation.

The alloy VT16 was treated by severe plastic deformation to produce submicrocrystalline material. Besides, the processing limits were determined for the alloy treated by the warm-rolling method. The alloy was worked by the open die forging method, with the direction of loading, changing in each of three passes. As-worked material had non-uniform grain-subgrain structure which contained α-phase components having characteristic sizes 100…160 nm. The forged alloy billets were additionally worked by multi-pass rolling in grooved rolls at the temperatures 550…6000 C to the total reduction of 80%. The resultant submicrocrystalline material had structure components whose sizes were equal on average to ~25 nm, with occasional grains having sizes ≤ 100 nm still occurring in the material structure. Further reduction of the billets by rolling was found to cause billet cracking.

Improvement of the process of titanium alloys production by developing technology for manufacture of titanium sponge with specified oxygen content.

Efficiency of the process of doped titanium alloys smelting has been considerably simplified and increased by means of improvement of the technology of production of titanium sponge with specified oxygen content.
Various methods of oxigen infusion, when producing titanium ingots, have been put to the test and mechanical properties of the ingots have been studied. Production of titanium ingots from titanium sponge with a specified content of oxygen, which is infused into a titanium sponge block at the stage of titanium reduction, is the most promising one. The possibility to increase the content of oxygen from 0.04% to 0.50% in titanium sponge, which corresponds to its content in industrial titanium alloys, has been proven.
In order to implement the technology for titanium sponge alloying from gas phase in the process of reduction in an industrial reactor a system for feeding of the specially prepared argon-oxygen blend into the reduction reactor has been developed.
The developed technology for alloying of titanium sponge blocks underlined the technological process of production of titanium ingots at ZTMC. Thereby, the number of technological operations, such as crushing, sorting, briquetting, and burdening, has been reduced by means of direct smelting of blocks of titanium sponge alloyed by oxygen. Adoption of the developed technology at ZTMC resulted in cost reduction and increase of quality of titanium ingots.

Integrated approach to creation and operation of titanium metallurgical plants.

At the present time only companies with combination of the highest production quality and low production cost have a chance to be competitive in tough market conditions.
The most important way to reach advanced technical and commercial gains is creation of production facilities on the base of modern equipment and technologies as well as application of innovation management solutions.
Author’s opinion about application of such integrated approach to development, creation and operation of titanium metallurgical plants is presented in the report.
